************ 사도행전 16장 ************
1 바울이 더베와 루스드라에도 이르매 거기 디모데라 하는 제자가 있으니 그 모친은 믿는 유대 여자요 부친은 헬라인이라
He came to Derbe and then to Lystra, where a disciple named Timothy lived, whose mother was a Jewess and a believer, but whose father was a Greek.
바울이 더베와 루스드라에도 이르매 거기 디모데라 하는 제자가 있으니 그 모친은 믿는 유대 여자요 부친은 헬라인이라
디모데의 유대인 모친의 이름은 '유니게'였다.
(디모데후서 1:5)
5 이는 네 속에 거짓이 없는 믿음이 있음을 생각함이라 이 믿음은 먼저 네 외조모 로이스와 네 어머니 유니게 속에 있더니 네 속에도 있는 줄을 확신하노라
2 디모데는 루스드라와 이고니온에 있는 형제들에게 칭찬받는 자니
The brothers at Lystra and Iconium spoke well of him.
3 바울이 그를 데리고 떠나고자 할새 그 지경에 있는 유대인을 인하여 그를 데려다가 할례를 행하니 이는 그 사람들이 그의 부친은 헬라인인 줄 다 앎이러라
Paul wanted to take him along on the journey, so he circumcised him because of the Jews who lived in that area, for they all knew that his father was a Greek.
4 여러 성으로 다녀갈 때에 예루살렘에 있는 사도와 장로들의 작정한 규례를 저희에게 주어 지키게 하니
As they traveled from town to town, they delivered the decisions reached by the apostles and elders in Jerusalem for the people to obey.
5 이에 여러 교회가 믿음이 더 굳어지고 수가 날마다 더하니라
So the churches were strengthened in the faith and grew daily in numbers.

이 구절은 “오직 성령이 너희에게 임하시면 너희가 권능을 받고 예루살렘과 온 유대와 사마리아와 땅 끝까지 이르러 내 증인이 되리라 하시니라(1:8)”라는 말씀을 따라 성령 충만을 받은 사도 바울이 예수 그리스도의 증인이 되어 땅끝까지 복음의 지경을 넓혀 가는 모습이 나타나 있으며, 성령의 주권과 간섭 하에 복음 사역이 지속적으로 승리한다는 것을 보여준다.
6 성령이 아시아에서 말씀을 전하지 못하게 하시거늘 브루기아와 갈라디아 땅으로 다녀가
Paul and his companions traveled throughout the region of Phrygia and Galatia, having been kept by the Holy Spirit from preaching the word in the province of Asia.
성령이 아시아에서 말씀을 전하지 못하게 하시거늘 브루기아와 갈라디아 땅으로 다녀가
아시아, 브루기아, 갈라디아는 모두 로마의 지역명이다.
7 무시아 앞에 이르러 비두니아로 가고자 애쓰되 예수의 영이 허락지 아니하시는지라
When they came to the border of Mysia, they tried to enter Bithynia, but the Spirit of Jesus would not allow them to.
8 무시아를 지나 드로아로 내려갔는데
So they passed by Mysia and went down to Troas.
9 밤에 환상이 바울에게 보이니 마게도냐 사람 하나가 서서 그에게 청하여 가로되 마게도냐로 건너와서 우리를 도우라 하거늘
During the night Paul had a vision of a man of Macedonia standing and begging him, "Come over to Macedonia and help us."
10 바울이 이 환상을 본 후에 우리가 곧 마게도냐로 떠나기를 힘쓰니 이는 하나님이 저 사람들에게 복음을 전하라고 우리를 부르신 줄로 인정함이러라
After Paul had seen the vision, we got ready at once to leave for Macedonia, concluding that God had called us to preach the gospel to them.
바울이 이 환상을 본 후에 우리가 곧 마게도냐로 떠나기를 힘쓰니 이는 하나님이 저 사람들에게 복음을 전하라고 우리를 부르신 줄로 인정함이러라
지금까지 사도행전을 기록하는 데에 있어서 3인칭 시점이 사용되었으나 이곳부터 '우리'라는 1인칭 시점으로 바뀌어 기록이 시작된다. 이는 저자인 누가가 사도 바울의 선교 여행에 직접 참여했다는 것을 알려주기 위해 다른 곳과 구분하여 1인칭 복수인 ‘우리’라는 표현을(소위 ‘we’ passage라 알려짐) 사용한 것이다. 16장에서는 10절부터 17절까지이다.
11 드로아에서 배로 떠나 사모드라게로 직행하여 이튿날 네압볼리로 가고
From Troas we put out to sea and sailed straight for Samothrace, and the next day on to Neapolis.
12 거기서 빌립보에 이르니 이는 마게도냐 지경 첫성이요 또 로마의 식민지라 이 성에서 수일을 유하다가
From there we traveled to Philippi, a Roman colony and the leading city of that district of Macedonia. And we stayed there several days.
거기서 빌립보에 이르니 이는 마게도냐 지경 첫성이요 또 로마의 식민지라 이 성에서 수일을 유하다가
그리스 북부 마케도니아 지방의 첫 성인 빌립보는 사랑한다는 의미의 '필로스'와 말이라는 의미의 '입보스'가 합쳐져서 '말을 사랑하는 사람'이라는 뜻을 지니고 있다.
이 이름은 알렉산드로스의 부친인 마케도니아의 왕 필립2세의 이름을 딴 것이다.
빌립보는 신도시로서 로마의 은퇴군인들과 로마의 시민권자들이 살고 있었으며 이들은 시민권자로서 자부심이 강했다.
13 안식일에 우리가 기도처가 있는가 하여 문 밖 강가에 나가 거기 앉아서 모인 여자들에게 말하더니
on the Sabbath we went outside the city gate to the river, where we expected to find a place of prayer. We sat down and began to speak to the women who had gathered there.
안식일에 우리가 기도처가 있는가 하여 문 밖 강가에 나가
안식일에 강가에 나간 이유는 기도할 곳을 찾기 위한 것이었다. 시편 137편의 말씀처럼 성전이나 회당이 없는 경우 강가에서 기도했기 때문이다.
(시편 137:1)
1 우리가 바벨론의 여러 강변 거기에 앉아서 시온을 기억하며 울었도다
이로부터 빌립보에는 회당이 없었다는 사실을 알 수 있다. 회당을 만들기 위한 조건은 성인 남자 10명이 있어야 한다는 것이었으며, 이로부터 빌립보에 있는 유대인 가정은 10가정 미만이었음을 알 수 있다. 즉, 빌립보는 유대인들이 거의 살지 않았던 이방인의 도시였다.
거기 앉아서 모인 여자들에게 말하더니
14 두아디라 성의 자주 장사로서 하나님을 공경하는 루디아라 하는 한 여자가 들었는데 주께서 그 마음을 열어 바울의 말을 청종하게 하신지라
one of those listening was a woman named Lydia, a dealer in purple cloth from the city of Thyatira, who was a worshiper of God. The Lord opened her heart to respond to Paul's message.
15 저와 그 집이 다 세례를 받고 우리에게 청하여 가로되 만일 나를 주 믿는 자로 알거든 내 집에 들어와 유하라 하고 강권하여 있게 하니라
When she and the members of her household were baptized, she invited us to her home. "If you consider me a believer in the Lord," she said, "come and stay at my house." And she persuaded us.
16 우리가 기도하는 곳에 가다가 점하는 귀신들린 여종 하나를 만나니 점으로 그 주인들을 크게 이하게 하는 자라
once when we were going to the place of prayer, we were met by a slave girl who had a spirit by which she predicted the future. She earned a great deal of money for her owners by fortune-telling.
17 바울과 우리를 좇아와서 소리질러 가로되 이 사람들은 지극히 높은 하나님의 종으로 구원의 길을 너희에게 전하는 자라 하며
This girl followed Paul and the rest of us, shouting, "These men are servants of the Most High God, who are telling you the way to be saved."
18 이같이 여러 날을 하는지라 바울이 심히 괴로와하여 돌이켜 그 귀신에게 이르되 예수 그리스도의 이름으로 내가 네게 명하노니 그에게서 나오라 하니 귀신이 즉시 나오니라
She kept this up for many days. Finally Paul became so troubled that he turned around and said to the spirit, "In the name of Jesus Christ I command you to come out of her!" At that moment the spirit left her.
19 종의 주인들은 자기 이익의 소망이 끊어진 것을 보고 바울과 실라를 잡아가지고 저자로 관원들에게 끌어갔다가
When the owners of the slave girl realized that their hope of making money was gone, they seized Paul and Silas and dragged them into the marketplace to face the authorities.
20 상관들 앞에 데리고 가서 말하되 이 사람들이 유대인인데 우리 성을 심히 요란케 하여
They brought them before the magistrates and said, "These men are Jews, and are throwing our city into an uproar
21 로마 사람인 우리가 받지도 못하고 행치도 못할 풍속을 전한다 하거늘
by advocating customs unlawful for us Romans to accept or practice."
22 무리가 일제히 일어나 송사하니 상관들이 옷을 찢어 벗기고 매로 치라 하여
The crowd joined in the attack against Paul and Silas, and the magistrates ordered them to be stripped and beaten.
23 많이 친 후에 옥에 가두고 간수에게 분부하여 든든히 지키라 하니
After they had been severely flogged, they were thrown into prison, and the jailer was commanded to guard them carefully.
24 그가 이러한 영을 받아 저희를 깊은 옥에 가두고 그 발을 착고에 든든히 채웠더니
Upon receiving such orders, he put them in the inner cell and fastened their feet in the stocks.
25 밤중쯤 되어 바울과 실라가 기도하고 하나님을 찬미하매 죄수들이 듣더라
About midnight Paul and Silas were praying and singing hymns to God, and the other prisoners were listening to them.
26 이에 홀연히 큰 지진이 나서 옥터가 움직이고 문이 곧 다 열리며 모든 사람의 매인 것이 다 벗어진지라
Suddenly there was such a violent earthquake that the foundations of the prison were shaken. At once all the prison doors flew open, and everybody's chains came loose.

바울과 실라가 기도하고 찬양하자 큰 지진이 나서 옥문이 다 열리고 착고가 벗어졌다.
이는 베드로가 옥에 갇였을 때 천사가 나타나 쇠사슬이 그 손에서 벗어진 일(12:7)과 매우 닮아 있다. 이를 통해 두 사도를 의도적으로 대비하고 있으며, 이방인의 사도이자 교회를 확장한 사도 바울의 권위를 베드로의 권위와 대등하게 보여주고자 한 의도를 발견할 수 있다.
27 간수가 자다가 깨어 옥문들이 열린 것을 보고 죄수들이 도망한 줄 생각하고 검을 빼어 자결하려 하거늘
The jailer woke up, and when he saw the prison doors open, he drew his sword and was about to kill himself because he thought the prisoners had escaped.
28 바울이 크게 소리질러 가로되 네 몸을 상하지 말라 우리가 다 여기 있노라 하니
But Paul shouted, "Don't harm yourself! We are all here!"
29 간수가 등불을 달라고 하며 뛰어들어가 무서워 떨며 바울과 실라 앞에 부복하고
The jailer called for lights, rushed in and fell trembling before Paul and Silas.
30 저희를 데리고 나가 가로되 선생들아 내가 어떻게 하여야 구원을 얻으리이까 하거늘
He then brought them out and asked, "Sirs, what must I do to be saved?"
31 가로되 주 예수를 믿으라 그리하면 너와 네 집이 구원을 얻으리라 하고
They replied, "Believe in the Lord Jesus, and you will be saved--you and your household."
32 주의 말씀을 그 사람과 그 집에 있는 모든 사람에게 전하더라
Then they spoke the word of the Lord to him and to all the others in his house.
33 밤 그 시에 간수가 저희를 데려다가 그 맞은 자리를 씻기고 자기와 그 권속이 다 세례를 받은 후
At that hour of the night the jailer took them and washed their wounds; then immediately he and all his family were baptized.
34 저희를 데리고 자기 집에 올라가서 음식을 차려 주고 저와 온 집이 하나님을 믿었으므로 크게 기뻐하니라
The jailer brought them into his house and set a meal before them; he was filled with joy because he had come to believe in God--he and his whole family.
35 날이 새매 상관들이 아전을 보내어 이 사람들을 놓으라 하니
When it was daylight, the magistrates sent their officers to the jailer with the order: "Release those men."
magistrate는 치안판사의 뜻이다. 치안판사들이 관리를 간수에게 보내어 명령을 전달했다.
36 간수가 이 말대로 바울에게 고하되 상관들이 사람을 보내어 너희를 놓으라 하였으니 이제는 나가서 평안히 가라 하거늘
The jailer told Paul, "The magistrates have ordered that you and Silas be released. Now you can leave. Go in peace."
그리고, 간수는 바울에게 치안판사의 명령을 전했다.
37 바울이 이르되 로마 사람인 우리를 죄도 정치 아니하고 공중 앞에서 때리고 옥에 가두었다가 이제는 가만히 우리를 내어 보내고자 하느냐 아니라 저희가 친히 와서 우리를 데리고 나가야 하리라 한대
But Paul said to the officers: "They beat us publicly without a trial, even though we are Roman citizens, and threw us into prison. And now do they want to get rid of us quietly? No! Let them come themselves and escort us out."
바울과 실라는 관리들에게 처벌과 처리과정의 부당함을 지적하였다.
38 아전들이 이 말로 상관들에게 고하니 저희가 로마 사람이라 하는 말을 듣고 두려워하여
The officers reported this to the magistrates, and when they heard that Paul and Silas were Roman citizens, they were alarmed.
관리들이 바울과 실라의 이러한 항의를 치안판사에게 전달했다.
39 와서 권하여 데리고 나가 성에서 떠나기를 청하니
They came to appease them and escorted them from the prison, requesting them to leave the city.
치안판사들이 와서 바울과 실라를 달래고 감옥에서 이끌어 내었다.
40 두 사람이 옥에서 나가 루디아의 집에 들어가서 형제들을 만나 보고 위로하고 가니라
After Paul and Silas came out of the prison, they went to Lydia's house, where they met with the brothers and encouraged them. Then they left.
